A calibrated agricultural water demand model for three regions in northern Baja California Agrociencia
Medellín-Azuara,Josué; Howitt,Richard E.; Waller-Barrera,Cynthia; Mendoza-Espinosa,Leopoldo G.; Lund,Jay R.; Taylor,Joseph E..
Irrigated agriculture is the largest water user in many regions, and agricultural water use efficiency and consumption has been studied by several authors. This paper provides a framework and application of economic valuation of water for agriculture in three regions in northern Baja California, Mexico, namely Guadalupe, Maneadero and Mexicali Valleys. Positive mathematical programming (PMP), a deductive valuation technique, was the framework used for this estimation using water delivery data reported by the National Water Commission in Mexicali, production costs and cultivated area, production factors use from the Agriculture Ministry (SAGARPA); and other data from previous studies. Analysis of the results shows that marginal economic water value in...

Histological Description of the Male and Female Gonads in Tegula eiseni, T. funebralis, T. aureotincta, T. gallina and T. regina from Bahia Tortugas, B.C.S., Mexico International Journal of Morphology
Ortíz-Ordoñez,Esperanza; Mendoza-Santana,Elizabeth L; Belmar-Pérez,Jorge; Padilla-Benavides,Teresita del Niño Jesús.
Some of the gastropods of the Baja California peninsula are of commercial value, but the majority are not. Among the less commercially valuable species are members of the genus Tegula, which are ecologically important because of their abundance and the trophic level they occupy. Mature specimens of T. eiseni, T. funebralis, T. aureotincta, T. gallina, and T. regina were collected from two rocky reefs close to Bahía Tortugas, B.C.S. and were processed using a paraffin-embedding technique. All of these species are dioecious, without external sexual dimorphism; in adults, the female gonads are green moss colored while male gonads are cream colored. The gonadal tissue is limited externally by a single ciliated cylindrical epithelium with plentiful granular...

New constraints on deglacial marine radiocarbon anomalies from a depth transect near Baja California ArchiMer
Lindsay, Colin M.; Lehman, Scott J.; Marchitto, Thomas M.; Carriquiry, Jose D.; Ortiz, Joseph D..
Previous studies have shown that radiocarbon activities (C-14) in the low-latitude, middepth Pacific and Indian Oceans were anomalously low during Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1, similar to 17.8-14.6ka) and the Younger Dryas (YD, similar to 12.8-11.5ka), coincident with intervals of rising atmospheric CO2 concentration and declining atmospheric C-14. However, a full explanation of these events remains elusive due to sparse and sometimes conflicting data. Here we present new C-14 measurements on benthic and planktic foraminifera that, in combination with previously published measurements, enable us to reconstruct the C-14 depth gradient near Baja California. Vertical profiles were similar to present during the Last Glacial Maximum and BOlling/Allerod (14.6-12.8ka)...

Wildfire and Spatial Patterns in Forests in Northwestern Mexico: The United States Wishes It Had Similar Fire Problems Ecology and Society
Stephens, Scott L; ESPM Department University of California, Berkeley; stephens@nature.berkeley.edu; Fry, Danny L.; ESPM Department University of California, Berkeley; dfry@nature.berkeley.edu.
Knowledge of the ecological effect of wildfire is important to resource managers, especially from forests in which past anthropogenic influences, e.g., fire suppression and timber harvesting, have been limited. Changes to forest structure and regeneration patterns were documented in a relatively unique old-growth Jeffrey pine-mixed conifer forest in northwestern Mexico after a July 2003 wildfire. This forested area has never been harvested and fire suppression did not begin until the 1970s. Fire effects were moderate especially considering that the wildfire occurred at the end of a severe, multi-year (1999-2003) drought. Shrub consumption was an important factor in tree mortality and the dominance of Jeffrey pine increased after fire. The Baja California...
